Haryana humbles Rajasthan

Principal Correspondent

GURGAON: Haryana made it to the quarterfinals for the first time in 44 years riding on international Manandeep’s six goals in the 14-0 win over Rajasthan in the last league match in Cluster I in the junior National football championship here on Sunday.

Manadeep carried on his good form after having played for the country in the AFC under-16 Champions Cup in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, early this month.

At the Devi Lal Sports Stadium here, Manandeep opened the scoring in the eighth minute and went on to find the net in the 16th, 20th, 32nd, 58th and 64th minutes as Haryana showed the improvement it has made over the last one year.

Tushar Chaudhary fired four goals, two each on either side of the half, while Akshar Dutt, Vivek Kumar and Samuel were the other scorers for Haryana.

Buoyed by the boys’ performance, the host association announced Rs. 51,000 cash prize for the team, regardless of the future results.

Haryana will play Mizoram in the first quarterfinal league tie on November 21.

Bihar and Bengal are the other teams that have confirmed their places in the quarterfinals league.

Bengal rode on to Soumik Chakraborty’s three goals to beat Gujarat 7-0 in a Cluster II tie later in the day.

Mizoram on top

Meanwhile, Mizoram emerged the top team in Cluster VII after defeating Tamil Nadu 2-1 at the Sector 12 Sports Stadium in Faridabad on Sunday.

Vanlalruata scored both the goals, in the 21st and 60th minutes, before A. Dilip Kumar (88th) found the consolation for Tamil Nadu.

In an inconsequential Cluster V league match, Maharashtra redeemed some pride with a 4-1 win over Punjab, which failed to win any of its league matches here.

The results:

Haryana 14 (Manandeep 8, 16, 20, 32, 58, 64, Tushar Chaudhary 12, 22, 63, 87, Akshay Dutt 56, 80, Vivek Kumar 73, Samuel 88) bt Rajasthan 0; Bengal 7 (Soumik Chakraborty 2, 42, 53, Mithun Saha 13, 67, Tilak Saha 83, Sajal Das 90) bt Gujarat 0; Uttarakhand 0 drew with Madhya Pradesh 0; Mizoram 2 (Vanlalruata 21, 60) bt Tamil Nadu 1 (A.
