NEW DELHI: Royal Johor defended its crown with a scintillating display as it quelled an early charge from Kingfisher First and won 9-8, in the Indian Open polo championship at the Jaipur Polo ground here on Sunday. In its second season since forming the team, Royal Johor emerged the best, in the first-ever match played in India with 40-goal as the cumulative handicap. Kingfisher First had raised the bar by forming a 20-goal team as it imported Brazilian Ubajara Andrare, a seven-goaler World Cup winner. Royal Johor, a team put up by the Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibrahim, apparently played the best card when it flew in Argentine Frankie Menendez, a seven-goal player, on Saturday night to bring the team on par with that of Kingfisher. Brisk startOn Sunday, Kingfisher made the brisk start with Andrade opening the score in the fourth minute of the first chukker. He later saved a good counter attack, but Johor fought back immediately through its mainstay, Santiago de Estrada, a six-goal player. After scoring the equaliser through a short penalty, Estrada almost put Johor ahead, but the first chukker ended 1-1. Englishman William Lucas then set up Andrade, who sent a high ball for Satinder Garcha. The two-goal Indian rider moved at high speed and put Kingfisher 2-1 up. Andrade then made it 3-1 in a solo effort right from the centre of the field. Somehow, Kingfisher got stuck there as Menendez played a key role to keep Estrada in the hunt. It paid nicely for Johor as Estrada struck two, one in the second chukker and the other at the start of the third, to level the scores again. Simran Shergill then put Royal Johor ahead 4-3 from where the defending champion never lost the sight of the coveted trophy. The result: Royal Johor 9 (Santiago de Estrada 4, Simran Shergill 2, Vishal Singh 2, Frankie Menendez) bt Kingfisher First 8 (Ubajara Andrade 4, Satinder Garcha, Angad Kalaan, William Lucas 2). — Principal Correspondent
