Suma wins 800m with new meet record

Madurai: Suma of Delhi won the 800m with a new meet record in the 33rd National sports festival for women — Group II, organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and Madurai District Administration, which got underway at the MGR Race Course stadium here on Tuesday.

Ambika Sridharan of Kerala finished second, while Pratina Tudu of West Bengal came third.

The Tamil Nadu teams made an impressive start in handball, kabaddi and volleyball, while defending champion West Bengal won its first match in volleyball.

The results: Handball: Pool ‘D’: TN bt Tripura 14-7.

Kabaddi: Pool ‘B’: TN bt Tripura 66-19.

Volleyball: Pool ‘C’: TN bt Mizoram 25-12, 25-16; Pool ‘A’: West Bengal bt Tripura 25-6, 25-15; Pool ‘B’: Karnataka bt U.P. 25-20, 26-28, 25-15.

Girls’ football

The sixth junior girls’ National football championship will get underway with a match between Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir at the SDAT stadium, Dindigul, on Wednesday.

E. Periasamy, Revenue Minister, will inaugurate the championship.

Muralikrishnan wins

B.T. Muralikrishnan won the title in the open category in the State-level chess tournament, while Felix Arockiadoss triumphed in the under-25 category in the district-level tournament, organised by the Silver Star Chess Club, at Karaikudi on Tuesday.

Final standings (open category): 1. B.T. Muralikrishnan (6.5 points); 2. Vijaya Sarathi (ERS) 6; 3. Kannan (SA) 6. District-level tournament: Under-25: 1. Felix Arockiadoss 5; 2. Sukumari 4; 3. Shivakumar 4.

Under-15: 1. M. Palaniappan 6.5; 2. Lakshmi Alagappan 6.5; 3. Arun Ramanathan 6.5.

Under-13: 1. B. Thiyagarayan 7; 2. R. Sivabalan 7; 3. V. Kasi 7.

Under-11: 1. V. Vijaya Krishna 7.5; 2. Sivaa Shaanth Suman 7; 3. Annamalai Srinivasan 6.5.

KU to host

Kalasalingam University will organise three all-India prize-money tournaments at Krishnankovil, near Srivilliputhur, in January.

The first will be an inter-university Twenty20 cricket tournament from January 3 to 8. The total prize-money will be Rs. two lakhs. The second tournament will be an inter-school Twenty20 cricket tournament from January 8 to 12 and the total prize-money will be Rs. 50,000. The third will be an inter-school girls volleyball tournament under floodlights from January 8 to 12, and the total prize-money is Rs. 50,000.

Hari is champion

Hari Pragadeesh of Bharathiya Vidhya Bhavan topped the table to emerge champion in category ‘A’ (classes 6 & 7) of the district-level chess tournament for matriculation schools in Coimbatore recently.

The results (winners only): Category ‘A’ (classes 6 & 7): Hari Pragadeesh (BVB).

Category ‘B’ (class 8): Vijay Ram (Bharathi Matriculation).

Category ‘C’ (classes 9 & 10): Shyam (ABC Matriculation).

Category ‘D’ (classes 11 & 12): Nishit A. Shah (Nehru Vidyalaya).
