A spate of records on day two

MYSORE: There was a splurge of records on the second day of the 23rd junior State athletics championship at the Chamundi Vihar stadium here on Tuesday.

M.K. Sumanth from Tumkur sailed over the hurdles in the boys under-16 section clocking 14.0 seconds bettering the mark of 14.1 seconds held jointly by Surendra Patil and M.K. Santosh.

At the triple jump pit, Arshad, a student from Al Ameen College leapt to a distance of 14.22 metres eclipsing Y.S. Nagendra’s five-year-old mark of 13.84 metres.

The third record for the day came in boys’ under-18 hammer throw event. Udupi’s G.K. Vinay heaved the iron to a new distance of 49.08 metres which bettered K.S. Dinesh’s record of 46.75 metres set early this year.

Lack of competition saw M.R. Poovamma and Nischith J Shetty, both from Dakshina Kannada failing to improve upon their timings. While Poovamma clocked 56.2 seconds in the girls’ under-18 400 metres, Nischith clocked 50.8 seconds for the same distance in the boys’ under-20 event.

A scratch quartet from MEG Bangalore finished top in the boys’ under-20 4x100 metres relay. Having finished second the Sappers were upgraded as the Mysore team was disqualified for fielding runners from other age category.
