Gowda, Samuel hog the limelight

BANGALORE: Local lads Vinod Gowda and Rashien Samuel were in the spotlight on the second day of the Good Earth Super Series junior tennis tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Tuesday.

Gowda, playing some aggressive tennis, knocked out top seed N. Saikarthik of Andhra Pradesh 7-6(4), 6-4, while Rashien Samuel scripted a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 win over third seed Chetan Pandit also of AP. Both Gowda and Samuel entered the quarterfinals.

SBMJC posts win

Sree Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College (SBMJC) defeated St. Joseph’s Arts & Science College 3-0 in the Dr. Isaac memorial hockey tournament, conducted by the St. John’s Alumni Association, here on Tuesday.

M.M. Kariappa (13th and 41st) and B.M. Chengappa (52nd) scored for SBMJC.

In another match, St. Joseph’s Pre-University College and St. Joseph’s College of Commerce played out a 2-2 draw. Bopanna (13th) and Changappa (56th) scored for SJPUC, while Christopher (12th) and Robin (16th) were on target for SJCC.

CIL downs Oriental

CIL defeated Oriental FC 2-0 in a State super-division league match at the Football Stadium here on Tuesday evening.

Ravindran (60th min.) and K. Kumar (77th min.) helped CIL stay ahead.

Earlier in an ‘A’ division league match, BHEL (EPD) thrived on Thyagu’s 32nd minute strike to defeat RBI 1-0.

The super division and ‘A’ division league matches will have a break from December 2 to 15 as the Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) is hosting an inter-collegiate tournament from December 3 to 14.

Shishir slams ton

Shishir Bhavani’s 137 helped Dharwad Zone score 303 for six in the stipulated 90-over first innings against Combined City XI in a KSCA under-17 inter-zonal tournament match that commenced at Shimoga on Tuesday.

The scores: Bangalore City 221 in 79.2 overs (K. Vinay Kumar 69, Prithvi Vardarajan 44, Amoghvarsha five for 52) vs Tumkur Zone 37 for no loss in eight overs.

At Shimoga: Dharwad Zone 303 for six in 90 overs (Shishir Bhavani 137, Zeeshan Syed 73) vs Combined City XI 12 for no loss in four overs.

At Bhadravati: Shimoga Zone 173 in 79.1 overs (Manoj 47, Shivam Bajaj five for 58) vs Bangalore Zone 64 for one in 25 overs.
