MANGALORE: Sanjay J. Rao of Canara Pre-University College (Mangalore) and Manasa of Sharada Pre-University College (Mangalore) emerged champions in the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively in the two-day State-level inter-pre-university colleges’ chess tournament held at the Vishwamanava PU College, Kommerahalli, Mandya, from November 16. More than 140 students from all over the State participated. The event was to select the State team to the forthcoming National under-19 chess tournament. Sanjay (7) bagged his maiden State title after drawing his final round with M. Suraj of Bangalore. Defending champion Vishwas Saralaya of MGM PU College (Udupi) also finished with seven points but had to be content with second prize due to a lower progressive score. M. Suraj came third, while Sachin P.S. of Shimoga and Nishanth of Hassan also got into the State team with 6.5 points each. In the girls’ section, top seed Manasa maintained a clean slate in the eight rounds. She faced a tough fight from runner-up Soumya U. Vaze (Shimoga) in the sixth round. Soumya (6.5) and Meghana Deshmukh (6.5), who drew their game, finished second and third respectively. Soumyashree C. Ail (6) of Canara PU College (Mangalore) and Suraksha S. K. (6) of Bangalore also booked berths in the State team.
