Decade-long trauma: Relatives of victims of the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy leave the Patiala House Courts in New Delhi on Tuesday after the verdict in the case. Sushil and Gopal Ansal, owners of the theatre, were convicted under less stringent penal provisions, and face a maximum punishment of two years imprisonment. The judgment came under attack from the victims’ families, who termed it a “travesty of justice.” Fiftynine people were killed and 109 injured when the cinema caught fire, leading to a stampede.
