Periyasamy inaugurated the Thandrambattu taluk at a function held in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday. According to Mr. Periyasamy, the Election Commission (EC) had imposed a temporary ban on the bifurcation of existing taluks and the formation of new taluks in view of the exercise of delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly Constituencies being undertaken throughout the country. But, as the formation of a new taluk with Thandrambattu as headquarters was a long-pending demand of the people, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had issued orders for the formation and inauguration of the taluk with the condition that the EC’s permission could be obtained later, Mr. Periyasamy said. Food Minister E.V. Velu, who presided, said the Thandrambattu taluk has a population of 1,52,860, whose main occupation is agriculture. Rearing of cows, production of milk and supplying it to cooperative milk producers’ societies is an associate occupation. CertificatesHitherto, the people of Thandrambattu had to travel by three buses to reach the taluk office in Chengam to obtain nativity, income and community certificates and family cards. Now, the certificates can be collected from the new taluk office in Thandrambattu itself. Mr. Velu requested Mr. Periyasamy to take steps to construct a building for the new taluk office. The Ministers distributed free house site ‘pattas’ to 6,348 people, disbursed loans to the tune of Rs.1.03 crore to 265 women’s self-help groups, old age pension under the National Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension Scheme to 10 persons and marriage assistance of Rs.5,000 each to two persons. Collector Satyabrata Sahoo lit the traditional lamp. District Revenue Officer G. Thamarai welcomed the gathering. MLAs K. Pitchandi (Tiruvannamalai), R. Sivanandam (Arni), S.P. Jayaraman (Vandavasi), P.S. Vijayakumar (Polur), G. Edhirolimanian (Peranamallur), and District Panchayat chairman M.P. Giri spoke.
