AIADMK men stage demonstration

Staff Reporter

In support of medical college students in Theni

“DROP MOVE”: AIADMK men staging a demonstration before the Theni Government Medical College at Andipatti on Tuesday.

THENI: A weeklong stir by students of Theni Government Medical College against “extension” of MBBS course to six and a half years was intensified on Tuesday as hundreds of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres led by Periakulam MLA O. Paneerselvam staged demonstration before the college and urged the Central Government to drop the move.

(The Union Health Ministry had proposed one-year compulsory rural posting for the medicos thereby extending the medical course to six and a half years from five and a half years.)

Mr. Pannerselvam said that such a move would economically affect medical students, particularly from rural areas. He also alleged that the State had become a haven for terrorists and extremists.

Already, the medicos had been boycotting classes for the past one week and staged a demonstration, observed fast and formed human chain covering their mouth with black cloth.

Even as the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said that there was no move to introduce a bill this year and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi assured to take efforts, the medicos continued their agitation for the eighth day.

Services hit

Already, Theni Government Medical College Hospital that has been treating over 1,000 patients every day has been struggling with shortage of staff. With the recent inauguration of 300-bed new ward before the existing building, hospital infrastructure has been enhanced manifold.

“We have been struggling to offer services to all as several posts were kept vacant. The posts sanctioned by the government recently did not even cover even 50 per cent of the existing vacancies,” doctors said.
