TAMBARAM: The State Highways Department and some urban local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai have come together to carry out improvement works on Velachery Main Road.

The works are part of the initiatives to reduce the rate of road accidents and improve the riding conditions. The arterial road, originally known as MBI (Marmalong Bridge Irumbuliyur) Road originates from Tambaram and connects Saidapet via Velachery. The 21-km stretch has become an important link to Chennai from the southern suburbs and is also the hub of IT companies along Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road.)

About a decade ago, the department commenced improvement works for the first time on this road. The works included widening of the stretch and provision of medians.

Six-lane pathway

However, inadequate illumination continues to be a problem along this road. Engineers of the State Highways Department said they have drawn up a plan to develop this road, which includes converting the stretch between Pallikaranai junction and Velachery as a six-lane pathway.

The department had started identifying the exact boundaries as it was originally conceived as a 150-foot-wide road between Tambaram and Saidapet. They have started installing stones to mark the boundaries, and at a few places, the land acquisition process was on.

Work on a road overbridge to replace the railway level crossing in Tambaram and a grade separator at Pallikaranai intersection were currently on and once completed, traffic flow was bound to increase phenomenally. Hence, the present improvement programmes. Some local bodies along this road had also approached the department to install streetlights.

Streetlights

The Medavakkam village panchayat has started work on installing streetlights, while a proposal from the Sembakkam Town Panchayat was being processed. Administrative sanction was granted to Pallikaranai Town Panchayat for installing a high mast lamp.

Highways Department officials said while most of the improvement works were their task, it was the responsibility of local bodies to install the streetlights.

A couple of high mast lamps have already been installed. Traffic police say that poor illumination has been an important cause of road accidents.

Two wings of the Highways Department — General and Projects — are involved in the improvement programme. Officials also conceded that accumulation of silt on road edges posed risks to motorists, particularly to two-wheelers and that they were taking steps at regular intervals to clear it.
