Governor calls for study on exploring resources and novel production methods “We have abundant supply of food, but food industry is in the fifth place”
INFORMATIVE RIDE: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at ‘Foodpro 2007’ exhibition in Chennai on Tuesday. P.K. Mohapatra, chairman of CII southern region, is in the picture. CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Tuesday urged the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to play a pioneering role in bringing about development and growth in food processing. Delivering the valedictory address at ‘Foodpro 2007’ conference on ’Driving the next agri revolution,’ organised by the CII, he said: “India has enormous growth potential, and we can become the world’s number one food producer if we explore our resources fully.” Mr. Barnala, who went around the seventh edition of India’s biennial Food Processing and Food Technology Trade Fair, said such expos would help the Indian food processing industry scale new heights in the global market. According to him, India was the second largest producer of food, next to China, the world’s largest producer of cereals and milk, the second largest producer of rice, wheat, sugar, fruits and vegetables and the third largest producer of cotton. It also had the highest number of food processing plants. The food industry was estimated to be worth over $200 billion, and would grow to $310 billion by 2015. Strategies“We have abundant supply of food, but the food industry is only in the fifth place,” he said, calling for a thorough study on exploring the resources and the use of novel methods of production and processing, and strategies to improvise food processing. Creditable performance
Mr. Barnala pointed out that Tamil Nadu was one of the States with a creditable performance in agricultural production through advanced technologies, with commitment to growth and development of agro and agro-processing industries. CII Southern Region chairman P.K. Mohapatra said: “Our primary and secondary focus is to foster the growth of the food processing industry. It is the fastest growing segment in the country. In the last two years, a lot has happened and is happening in this sector. Indian foods have overtaken Italian and Korean foods in the food retail area in the U.S. We expect a similar trend in India too.”
