BJP member breaks down in Rajya Sabha

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party member Gyan Prakash Pilania on Thursday broke down in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Bill, 2007. Taking part in the debate, Mr. Pilania, who was seated in a wheel chair, became emotional and broke down while narrating the sorry state of affairs with regards to elders in society.

With tears rolling down his eyes, he said it was an embarrassing situation that an elder would have to resort to legal course for getting his rightful share and living. He invoked verses from epics to recall how elders had commanded respect in ancient Indian society.

Lack of quorum

The Upper House was adjourned for the day due to lack of quorum.

The House was having a short duration discussion on the functioning of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme when BJP member Ajay Maroo pressed for quorum. Following this, the quorum bell was pressed.

House adjourned

As the number of members present in the House was less than the required, P.J. Kurien, who was in the Chair, adjourned the House for the day.
