Chance for youngstersThe spotlight will be on the young brigade in the Canara Bank all-India senior badminton championship when the main rounds gets underway from Sunday. Some of the big guns of the Indian badminton, including National champion Chetan Anand, Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhat and the women’s ace, Saina Nehwal, are not in the fray as they are expected to play in the Olympic qualifying tournaments abroad. But their absence should spur the younger lot to prove their mettle and earn places in the Indian squads for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup competitions in February 2008 and also for the European circuit tour in March. Pick of the lotYoungsters Anand Pawar, Kashyap, Ajay Jayaram and Jishnu Sanyal in the men’s singles, Aditi Mutatkar, Ruth Misha, Sayali Gokhale, Gayatri Vartak in women’s singles are the pick of the young lot.
Kashyap and Anand Pawar are the top two seeds in the men’s singles. Aditi Mutatkar (India No. 2) and Gayatri Vartak, who did well in the Scottish and Welsh Open internationals respectively, are expected to pose a threat to seasoned campaigners like Trupti Murgunde and Meenakshi. They had a stint under British coach Tom John. Anand, Aditi and Gayatri were sent to Europe under Tata Padukone Badminton Academy’s over seas exchange programme. The seedings: Men’s singles: 1. Bhavani, representing Dakshina Kannada district who bagged the individual championship with her swimming efforts, also went on to win the gold medal in discus throw. Easy for Rotary EMHSRotary English Medium High School defeated KPES HS by 129 runs in the KSCA under-17 inter-school cricket league matches of the Dharwad Zone at Hubli on Saturday.
