Oration medal was presented to Nobel laureate Roger D Kornberg

VISAKHAPATNAM: Nucleosome, the fundamental particle of chromosome, plays a vital role in the transcription of DNA, said Nobel laureate Roger D Kornberg.

Delivering the Prof. P. Brahmayya Sastry Memorial Oration – 2008 here on Wednesday, he explained through a PowerPoint presentation his experiments on the dynamics of molecules in membranes, diffusion in lipid layers and the structural basis of biological molecules.

Prof. Kornberg also spoke at length on the transformation of a gene from the inactive to active stage and the flow of genetic information in the RNA polymerase chain.

He said that gene expression studies and stem cell research would help in preventing genetic defects in newborn babies. While the results of some of the stem cell technologies would be available soon, others would take many years before they reach the field.

Earlier, Superintendent of King George Hospital T. Ravi Raju recalled the contribution of the late Prof. P. Brahmayya Sastry to Andhra Medical College and the world through his teaching and research.

Introducing Prof. Kornberg, he said that the ‘eukaryotic transcription’ had won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006. Prof. Kornberg had also discovered the ‘nucleosome’.

Dr. G.R.K. Raju presented the oration medal to Prof. Kornberg.
