Kalasalingam University starts well

Srivilliputtur: Host Kalasalingam University registered a 26-run victory over Kannada University (Hampi) in the inaugural match in the three-team Group ‘C’ league of the all- India inter-university Twenty20 cricket tournament for Anandam Ammal Memorial Trophy near here on Thursday.

The scores: Group ‘A’: Pondicherry 178 for nine in 20 overs (Renganaathan 45, Shivaraj 33, Mohanraj 26, Senthil 27, Anuraj three for 26, Darwin three for 49, Gopi two for 21, Gerald two for 24) bt Karunya 70 in 18 overs (Shivaraj two for 21, Kadir two for 12, Prabu two for 14, Mohanraj two for 14).

Group ‘B’: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (Bubaneshwar) 86 for nine in 20 overs (Fahat three for 22, Vinod Kumar two for 14) lost to Calicut 87 for four in 12 overs (Prasoon two for 29, Manoj two for seven).

Group ‘C’: Kalasalingam 117 in 19.3 overs (Sunder 31, Chidambaran 27, Sudeet three for 22, Pambapathy two for 10) bt Kannada 91 for eight in 20 overs (Pambapathy 40, Baskaran two for 10).

Group ‘D’: SRM University (Chennai) 136 for nine in 20 overs (Gopinath 31, Sasikumar two for 22, Sivakumar two for 14) lost to Annamalai 137 for seven in 19.1 overs (Ramani 30, Manikandan 39, K. Sriram two for 16).

Chess tournament

Rathinam Chess Academy will organise the S. Duraisamy Nadar Memorial Trophy District-level Open and for boys and girls (under-11 and 9 years) chess tournament on January 6 at Sivakasi. Those born on or after 1-1-’97 (u-11) and 1-1-’99 (u-7) are eligible to participate. For details, contact S.R. Rajan at 99766-19819.

Kho-kho tournament

The Manonmaniam Sundarar University will organise the South West zone inter-university women’s kho-kho tournament from January 8 to 14 and the all-India inter-zone tournament from January 15 to 18 at the VOC Stadium in Palayamkottai.

Seventy-two teams, including the defending champion, University of Calicut, last year’s runner-up, Pune University and the semifinalists, Mumbai and Mysore are participating in the tournament, which will be conducted on knockout-cum-league basis.

For the knockout phase, Calicut, Pune, Mumbai and Mysore have been seeded direct into the quarterfinals.
