CHENNAI: Rohini Rau, representing India in the Laser Radial class in the Asia-Pacific championships being held in Melbourne, qualified for the gold fleet phase of the championship on Thursday. This will help her compete with the top 63 sailors in the remaining four races of the championship, according to information received here. There were 121 competitors in the Laser Radial class, including men and youth. In the women’s category, Rohini stood at a creditable 31st spot without her second discard. Though she was up against strong winds she not only remained afloat but also finished 23rd. This was in the eighth race, and the last of the qualifying ones for the gold fleet. She is allowed two discards. Rohini’s first DNF (Did Not Finish due to a torn rope in the first race) has been discarded. After that, she had a 16th place finish in two races and 23rd in one. Rohini is using the championship to train for the women’s Radial World event in Auckland from March 15 to 20. This is also the second and final qualifier for this year’s Beijing Olympics. — Special Correspondent
