Seeking protection: Telugu Desam Mahila State president presenting a memorandum to APSHRC Chairman B. Subhashan Reddy on the atrocities against women in Hyderabad on Monday. HYDERABAD: Roja, president of Telugu Mahila, women’s wing of Telugu Desam Party has termed as “meaningless”, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s comment that film stars were good for “song and dance” and not for public service. At a press conference after a meeting of the women’s wing, Ms. Roja, a film actress herself, said it was unfortunate that the BSP leader had come up with such a statement. She seemed to have forgotten that leading actors like M. G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu and N. T. Rama Rao had not only made it big in politics but were highly successful as Chief Ministers. They had shown that cinema and politics could indeed go together without any clash of interests, she said. It would be better for the BSP chief to appreciate it instead of being critical of it. Ms. Roja said the party’s women’s wing would soon launch an agitation against “belt shops” selling liquor illegally as they ruining the lives of people in rural areas. Memorandum givenLater, Ms. Roja led a delegation to State Human Rights Commission and submitted a memorandum to its chairman Justice B. Subhashan Reddy demanding an inquiry into the series of atrocities against women. She said during the last few days, a MBA student, Rupadevi was murderd in Kukatpally, while another student Ayesha Meera was raped and murdered. Yet another woman was subjected to gangrape in Medak. Last year, tribal women of Vakapalli were raped by police who were supposed to protect them. Such incidents were occurring frequently as the government and police were not taking stringent action. The commission should look into the issue as it was worst kind of violation of rights of women.
