Proposal mooted for RTO Central

V.S. Palaniappan

To cater to growing vehicle population

RTO (North) likely to be shifted to Thadagam Road

Coimbatore: The Transport Department is planning one more Regional Transport Office here to cater to the growing vehicle population.

After reorganising the jurisdiction of RTO (North) and RTO (South), an RTO for Coimbatore Central should be established, according to Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, T. Gunasekaran.

The eastern part of Coimbatore would continue to be with RTO (South) while the western part of the city would form part of the RTO (North). The RTO (South) was recently shifted to Peelamedu for the convenience of the people and to ease congestion at the Transport Department office on Dr. Balasundaram Road. Previously this office housed both the RTOs and the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The RTO (North) is likely to be shifted to Thadagam Road. The proposed RTO (Central) will be housed at the Transport Department office on Dr. Balasundaram Road. Gandhipuram, Avarampalayam, Puliakulam, Race Course, Ramanathapuram, Nanjundapuram, Ukkadam and Fort areas will be brought under its jurisdiction.

According to motor vehicle rules each RTO should have only 10,000 transport vehicles under its administrative control.

The RTO (South) is dealing with over 3.37 lakh vehicles and the RTO (North) 2.95 lakh vehicles as on date. The city is witnessing a net addition of close to 350 vehicles a day.

According to a rough estimate, a recurring expenditure of Rs. 35.23 lakh and a non-recurring capital investment of Rs. 33.51 lakh are needed to set up the new office.

It is expected to generate a revenue of Rs. 2,300 lakh.
