Estimates are currently being prepared for the preliminary design Traffic studies being conducted at various locations proposed for flyovers CHENNAI: Flyovers estimated to cost over Rs. 100 crore have been proposed along Rajiv Gandhi Salai (the IT Corridor). The Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) has discussed the desirable alignments for the flyovers at Tiruvanmiyur junction and SRP Tools junction, opposite the Lifeline Hospital, between the Hospital and Karapakkam and at Sholinganallur junction. The aim is to keep movement between Madhya Kailash and Siruseri signal-free, said TNRDC Director-in-Charge K.R. Viswanathan. The flyovers would also enable the goal of allowing U turns every two km. Estimates are currently being prepared for the preliminary design. The flyovers would have four lanes with two lanes in either direction, while the rest of the corridor has six lanes. Work would commence on the flyovers once the work on the main carriageway and the service lanes are completed for Phase I of the corridor, which is likely to take another year. Minimal or no land acquisition would be required for these flyovers, officials said. Traffic studies are being conducted at various locations proposed for flyovers. Consultants appointed by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) have found a 25 per cent increase in the traffic flow between July and October 2007. Of the daily average of 32,000 vehicles that crossed Perungudi on the corridor during the period of the study in October 2007, half are cars, vans and jeeps. Nineteen per cent are three-wheelers, while buses and light commercial vehicles account for 11 per cent each. Two-wheelers are outside the ambit of the study, as the TNRDC is also using the data to project tolling results. The study has found a marginal dip in three-wheeler and heavy commercial vehicle movement.
