Moving farewell to Gopi

TRIBUTES: Friends and admirers pay homage to actor Gopi when his body was kept at the VJT Hall in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor Gopi was cremated with full State honours at the Thycaud electric crematorium here on Wednesday.

Large number of people, including many prominent personalities from film and various other fields, thronged the crematorium to give a moving farewell to the renowned actor who with his versatile and effortless acting style had carved a place of pride for Malayalam in the national and global acting arena. The funeral rituals were performed by his son, Muralikrishnan.

People were seen struggling to control their sobs as they filed past the body of the master performer when it was kept at the VJT Hall and Kalabhavan Theatre to enable the public to pay their last respects.

There was a steady flow of mourners to his house at Peyad also where the body was being kept since Tuesday noon. They included Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, several of his Cabinet colleagues, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and many other party leaders, besides prominent film personalities like Mammootty.

Ministers G. Sudhakaran, M. Vijayakumar, Mathew T. Thomas and M.A. Baby, and many film personalities including Mohanlal, Thilakan, Murali, Kaviyur Ponnamma, Sreekumaran Tampi, were present at the VJT Hall. Former Union Minister and BJP leader O. Rajagopal, BJP State president P.K. Krishnadas and many other political leaders also paid their last respects to the departed actor at the VJT Hall. The legendary actor died on Tuesday at a private hospital.
