Incidents in Kasaragod due to Home Department’s failure, says Chandy

Kozhikode: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has asked Inspector-General of Police A. Hemachandran to inquire into the violence that broke out at a meeting attended by Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy at Palakunnu in Uduma in Kasaragod on Friday.

The Minister, who was at Narikunni to attend the 15th annual conference of the Baithul Issa Sunni Centre, however, was quick to refute the charge of Mr. Chandy that the incident pointed to the failure of the Home Department to maintain law and order.

He said Mr. Chandy would make such statements about the Home Department since he was the Leader of the Opposition. But what was true was the Central government report expressing satisfaction at the law and order situation in the State, the Home Minister said.

He said tight security was provided to Mr. Chandy and he spoke to the Leader of the Opposition on telephone as soon as he heard of the incident. Mr. Chandy, who also attended the function at Baithul Issa Sunni Centre, said the incidents at Palakunnu was a reflection of the “fascist face of the CPIM)” and that the incident occurred due to failure of the Home Department.

He was well aware that such attacks on UDF workers were not uncommon in Kannur and Kasaragod districts, Now he had a feel of it, he said. Condemning the incident, IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said it was shocking that not even the Leader of the Opposition was safe in the State.

State committee of the National Lawyers Forum also condemned the attack.
