Motorists making their way through a water-logged road near Poorna Market on Saturday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: Normal life was disrupted as heavy rain lashed the city on Saturday. A bulletin issued by the Cyclone warning Centre here said the rain, caused by a trough of low pressure, was likely to continue in coastal Andhra during the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over one or two places in north coastal Andhra during the same period. During the 12-hour period ended at 8.30 p.m., the airport recorded as much as 12 c.m. and Waltair 7 c.m. It poured heavily overnight. During day, it rained intermittently till afternoon and later in torrents as though the skies had opened. Many roads were flooded and several low-lying areas, particularly in the old city, were inundated due to overflowing drains. In Seethampeta, water entered some buildings. In M.V.P. Colony Sector I, power broke down in the early hours following burning of a transformer. Control roomOther areas also suffered disruption in power supply. Revenue Divisional Officer D. Venkata Reddy said the district administration was fully geared to meet any emergency. A control room has been opened at the Collectorate and a relief centre at Gnanapuram at St. Peter’s High School. He said protection wall of Yerrigedda was still under construction. Had it been completed the inundation of the streets in Gnanapuram could have been prevented. There was knee-deep water in low-lying areas of the Old Town area, Railway New Colony and other areas. Beach Road opposite the Submarine Museum was under a sheet of water. Motorists had to take a diversion via Siripuram Road to reach their destinations.
