Memorial for Kengal sought

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The State government should immediately take steps to construct a “befitting memorial” for the former Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiya and institute an annual prize in his name, said president of the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha Vatal Nagaraj here on Sunday.

Mr. Nagaraj was speaking at the birth centenary celebrations of the late Chief Minister.

Mr. Nagaraj said the government appeared to have forgotten the services rendered by Mr. Hanumanthaiya.

Mr. Nagaraj said the government should institute a prize carrying a purse of Rs.10 lakh to be given annually to a person who had contributed to the development of Karnataka.

Statue

He also demanded that the government install a statue of Hanumanthaiya on the premises of Parliament House in New Delhi.

Journalist Patil Puttappa, Mythi Srikantaiah, MLC, and the former Minister Sriramulu spoke.

Mr. Puttappa said that Mr. Hanumanthaiya’s name had been proposed as a successor to the first Prime Minister Jawaharalal Nehru.
