Self-immolation bid averted
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: In a shocking incident, two women attempted to immolate themselves at their houses at Gollapalem village in Chebrolu, after they were allegedly humiliated by bank officials. There was mild tension as the officials threw away some household articles.
A couple of farmers from Gollapalem, Ramisetty Raghavaiah and Ramisetty Rammohana Rao, borrowed Rs. 1.5 lakh loan from a leading national bank in 2001. Having repaid Rs. 30,000 earlier, they repaid another Rs. 38,000 on February 6. On Wednesday, some bank men came to their houses and reportedly abused the women.
The bank officials left only after the intervention of locals. Unable to bear the humiliation, the women swallowed some pesticide and tried to immolate themselves. However, the locals thwarted their attempt.
