Underground drainage for Tirupur soon

M. Gunasekaran

Cleaning of manholes across the city has already begun

TIRUPUR: The Tirupur Corporation has at last decided to activate the underground drainage system built by the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL) more than a year ago, despite poor response from the public to the project.

While implementing the Rs. 1,023-crore water supply project, the NTADCL had created all infrastructure, including a treatment plant and pumping stations.

To activate the system, the Government had considered a request by the Tirupur Corporation to allow it to collect Rs. 6,000 as deposit from each house in 10 equal instalments in five years.

Owing to lack of awareness among the public on the project, the local body could collect the deposit from only 2,800 houses so far. Cleaning of manholes across the city has already begun.

“Of late the response from the public is gradually improving. We are hopeful that we will activate the system in a month. Once the NTADCL completes cleaning work, we will start providing connections to houses,” Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan told The Hindu.

Mayor K. Selvaraj has sought the cooperation of councillors and service organisations to create awareness among the public. Public hygiene would improve once the system was activated, Mr. Selvaraj said.

The Corporation would provide the underground drainage connection after the residents paid the first instalment.

Initially the officials estimated that 5,000 connections were required to conduct a trial run.

Authorities hope the number of houses taking sewerage connections will go up in the coming days.

To avoid cutting of roads for connections, the NTADCL had already laid pipes up to compounds of 13,435 houses and commercial buildings connecting the manholes.

Of the 52 wards in the city, the scheme covers only 37 wards now. The local body has been planning to extend the facility to unapproved layouts and areas that are not yet covered.
