CELEBRATING A SPECIAL MOMENT: As part of events marking her 60th birthday, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa exchanged garlands with her friend Sasikala at the Amirthakadeswarar temple in Thirukkadaiyur in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday. NAGAPATTINAM: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa participated in two days of religious events at the Amirthakadeswarar temple at Thirukkadaiyur in Nagapattinam district as part of her 60th birthday celebrations. Dressed in a green saree, Ms. Jayalalithaa, accompanied by her friend Sasikala, worshipped the many deities in the temple. She participated in ‘Go Pooja’ (cow worship) and ‘Gaja Pooja’ (elephant worship) at dawn on Thursday. An ‘ayush homam’ and special ‘poojas’ were performed to mark her birth star ‘Magam’ falling on Thursday. Her birth date is February 24 as per the English calendar. Only a few AIADMK leaders, including O.S. Manian and Kamaraj, accompanied her on the temple visit. The poor were fed as part of the celebrations, and a temple priest said cows and silk sarees were donated. Ms. Jayalalithaa left for Chennai by road after the prayers. PTI adds: Thirukkadaiyur, located on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, about 300 km south of Chennai, is one of the holy places of Saivism. Legend has it that Lord Siva prevailed over Yama, the God of death, here to save Markandeya’s life and bestowed him immortality.
