16 slums in GVMC area to get amenities under BSUP

Works scheduled for completion in 18 months

Corporation has to spend Rs. 58 cr.


VISAKHAPATNAM: Basic services and infrastructure will be provided in a total of 16 settlements of the poor in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, with over Rs.192.32 crores. The two major works are taken up under the Basic Services for Urban Poor of the JNNURM.

In the first package costing Rs.97.2 crores, water supply, underground drainage, roads, drains, streetlights, angnawadi centres, community halls etc., will be provided at Aganampudi, Duvvada, Rajiv Gruhakalpa in Survey nos. 27 and 179 at Madhurawada and the VAMBAY Colony there. The work has been awarded to Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd.

In the second package, 11 localities are covered and the amenities will be provided at an outlay of Rs.95.12 crores. The areas that will benefit from the scheme are Pedagantyada, Gangavaram, Bhanojithota, TGR Nagar, Sebastian Colony, Chakirevukonda, Sivasakthinagar, Siddhardhanagar, AK&AS Colony, Aganampudi Urban Poverty Housing Colony and Rasalamma Colony. Infrastructure major IVRCL Ltd. has bagged the work.

According to officials, the works launched recently are scheduled for completion in 18 months. In the total cost of the works under JNNURM, 50 per cent is grant from the Government of India while the State Government contributes 20 per cent and the rest is the share of the GVMC. The corporation has to spend around Rs.58 crores from its funds for the two works.

BRTS tenders

The consultancy report for the BRTS has been submitted to the corporation, it was learnt. The report was eagerly awaited and Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena wanted it to be expedited so that tenders can be called. “The voluminous report is worth the wait,” said an official.

The 20-km Pendurthy-NAD-Kancharapalem-Railway Station- Dwarakanagar corridor for which the report is available suggested 30 m width for the dedicated road for the operation of BRTS. At bus stops, to be located close to traffic junctions, the width will be 36 m. Tenders may be called by March second week of March.
