CHENNAI: Ashwin slammed in the match winner for Indian Bank to give the team its first win in four matches in the MIOT-CHA senior division super league hockey championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here. The 2-1 victory over Sports Authority of India ‘A’ on Friday brought to an end the poor run for the former champion this season. With a match to go, against SAI ‘B’ on Saturday, Indian Bank has three points in the six-team super league. International V. Raja put Indian Bank ahead after a goalless first half. The lead, however, did not last long. SAI levelled when Shyam Kumar produced a field goal. The match looked heading towards a draw before Ashwin’s opportunism gave Indian Bank full points. Former champion ICF is assured of a place in Sunday’s final after an unbeaten record in four matches (12 points). Reigning champion Indian Overseas Bank has nine points from three games after winning all three games. IOB plays Southern Railway (nine from four ties) on Saturday and is scheduled to take on ICF the next day. SAI ‘A’ has finished its programme of five matches with three points while the ‘B’ side has no points with one game left. Settu-Babu duo winsThe Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh pair of S. Settu and A. Ram Babu defeated T.A.P.N. Rao (AP) and Venkatachalam (TN) 6-4, 7-5 in the above-55 final of the Raju Vegesna-AISTA National-ranking veterans’ tennis tournament at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here on Friday. SSN won its two matches in the three-team round-robin league; it first blanked Loyola Yellows 3-0 and then edged out Loyola Whites 3-2. With two top-five state players in R. In its fourth and last match, the Galle BBA went down fighting to the Tamil Nadu junior team 87-61 at J.J. Indoor Stadium. A.N. Dyaneswaran, Chief Patron and Chairman, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, gave away the prizes. Sylvester sizzlesBy virtue of its first innings lead over Jawahar Vidyalaya, St. John’s ES & JC (Besant Nagar) won the final of the two-day Sacred Heart MHSS State-level under-15 cricket tournament here on Thursday. The highlight of St. John’s victory was a fine unbeaten 249 (261b, 28x4) by P.R. Sylvester Jayan. Jayan and C. Asuthosh (47) added 178 runs for the opening wicket. The scores (final): St. John’s ES & JC (Besant Nagar) 468 for seven in 90 overs (P.R. Sylvester Jayan 249 not out, C. Asuthosh 47, S.R. Vibhu 42, Shikkar Hukku 34, P. Sajan 56, B.
