TIRUNELVELI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s weavers’ wing celebrated the birthday of their ‘Thalapathi’ on Easter Sunday offering lunch to the students of Florence Swainson Higher Secondary School for the Deaf, Palayamkottai, and donated Rs.10,000 for the marriage of one of the orphan inmates of this school.

After reading the story of S. Valliammal, a deaf and dumb orphan girl of the school, whose marriage is going to be conducted on the school premises on March 26 with the help of some philanthropists, in The Hindu, the weavers’ wing decided to celebrate the birthday of Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin with the deaf and dumb children of the 112-year-old institution and contribute a sizable amount to the bride.

As the DMK men, led by Tirunelveli Corporation’s Palayamkottai Zone chairman, Suba. Seetharaman, entered the school, the children gave the visitors an arousing welcome.

Minister for Environment, Sports and Youth Welfare T.P.M. Maideen Khan and the party’s executive committee member A. Prabhakaran inaugurated the feast after the students profusely thanked the donors.

When weaver’s wing district secretary S. Abdul Khader handed over Rs.10,000 to Ms. Valliammal as assistance for her marriage, she, with tears trickling down from the eyes continuously, thanked everyone there with folded hands for their timely help.

“Five more deaf and dumb girls, all orphans in their twenties, are waiting for their marriage and only liberal donations from the philanthropists alone will ring the wedding bells for our daughters,” said principal of the school V. Mary Hepsybha.

Those who want to contribute to Ms. Valliammal and other girls, may contact The Principal, Florence Swainson Higher Secondary School for the Deaf, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli – 627 002. Ph. 0462 – 2573267 and 2584712. Email – fsdeafschool@yahoo.co.in
