High Court seeks list of defaulter MPs
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, New Delhi Municipal Council and Indian Tourism Development Corporation to submit to it a list of former Members of Parliament with their party affiliations who together own crores of rupees to them for using their services.
A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar passed the direction on a pending public interest litigation filed by Krishak Bharat, a non-governmental organisation, in 1998 seeking directions to the three public undertakings to recover their long pending dues from the defaulting MPs. The Bench directed the three bodies to submit the list by Sept. 17.
The number of these MPs is put at 244. They together owe MTNL Rs.6.72 crore, NDMC Rs.5.32 crore, and ITDC Rs.1 crore. The Lok Sabha Secretariat is already making deductions from the salaries of 62 sitting members of the Lower House to clear their pending telephone and electricity bills to MTNL and NDMC.
