A new Chair at Jamia


Jamia Millia Islamia is going to institute a Chair in the name of freedom fighter Saifuddin Kitchlew. The Chair has been granted by the Union Culture Minister, said Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan on the sidelines of a press conference on the campus earlier this week. “It will be a tribute to the sacrifices made by Saifuddin Kitchlew and is our way of celebrating and honouring the forgotten heroes of our national movement. The money needed to establish the Chair has b een sanctioned,” he informed. “We have not yet decided as to which particular faculty will get the Chair. Most probably it will be rotated from one faculty to another.

All the other details will be worked out later,” he added.Jamia is also short-listing names for probable candidates who will helm the Chair.Prof. Hasan also said the University had approached the Union Human Resource Development Ministry for a Chair in the name of M.A. Ansari, another significant political leader during the freedom struggle. The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned that a new boys’ hostel will be ready for occupancy by the next month. “There are detailed plans for three more boys’ hostels in the near future. They have been approved by the Academic Council,” he informed.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has announced the schedule for the second counselling of most of its academic programmes, including MBA, BBA, BCA and Master of Mass Media. The detailed counselling schedule can be accessed at www.ipu.ac.in . The second counselling for 2008-09 academic session will begin this Friday with the counselling of M.A. (English and Communication Studies) programme. The counselling for other courses will start subsequently. The counselling for all categories/courses will begin from the first rank onward and the seats will be allotted on the basis of merit. Candidates who were absent in the first counselling will also be permitted to attend the second counselling. Candidates who got admission in the first counselling have also been advised to attend the second one if they want to change the programme/institute included within the ambit of same test code on the basis of their merit against the available vacant seat, after depositing an additional sum of Rs.5,000.

Delhi University has announced the schedule for elections of office-bearers and members to the central council of the students’ union. The last date for receipt of nomination papers is August 22. Scrutiny will be done the same day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 25 and the final list of candidates will be published the same day. Nomination papers have to be submitted to the office of chief election officer Gurmeet Singh, while those standing fo r election to the central council have to deposit their papers to the concerned college or department. The polls are scheduled for September 5.

Jamal Ahmad, Director of the Centre of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Aligarh Muslim University, has been selected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London. Prof. Ahmad received the fellowship at a ceremony held in London recently. An expert in endocrinology and internal medicine, he has written extensively for reputed medical research journals.

Meanwhile, Hamid Ali of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology at AMU has been nominated for the Sheikh Zayed Energy Future Award of the United Arab Emirates. The award has been instituted for promotion of development of sustainable energy solutions.
