CANBERRA: Australia’s anti-doping agency said on Wednesday that it had tested each of the country’s 435 Olympic athletes before they left for Beijing — some up to five times — but there were no positive results. The Australian Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) also said it would keep frozen in cold storage more than 220 samples — including those from 47 Australian medal winners in Beijing — so that they could be thawed and retested anytime for the next eight years should new technology allow drug testers to find previously undetectable substances. The samples are being held in ASADA’s long-term deep freeze storage facility in Canberra known as The Tank. ASADA said about 30 per cent of the Beijing-bound athletes — or about 145 athletes — were tested twice, and that about a fifth — or about 80 athletes — were tested between two and five times. In all, the Australian anti-doping officials took more than 1,500 samples from 846 potential Olympians as part of a joint initiative with the Australian Olympic Committee. Stringent testingIt was the most stringent testing procedure put in place by the Australian authorities ahead of any games, ASADA said. “It sent a clear message to the rest of the world that Australia is serious about keeping the Games clean,” said AOC president John Coates. Australia’s 164 Paralympians were tested at least once, ASADA said. — AP
