Centre should assist Orissa: Advani

Prafulla Das

BHUBANESWAR: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and BJP prime ministerial candidate, L. K. Advani, on Wednesday said the Centre should extend all possible help to the Orissa government for carrying out relief and restoration work in the flood-affected areas of the State.

Mr. Advani, who made an aerial survey of the worst-hit districts of Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara in the afternoon, said the political nature of any government should not in any way influence the Centre’s decision while extending assistance to the flood-hit State.

Terming the current floods as the worst after the 1982 floods, he said it was a serious matter and the Centre should provide full assistance.

Observing that the Rs.500 interim aid announced by Union Minister Shivraj Patil was not enough, Mr. Advani hoped that a Central team would visit the State soon to assess the damages caused by the flood. The official death toll increased to 48 as the flood situation remained grim despite water levels receding in many areas.
