East Bengal to honour champion team
Kolkata: Remembering the historic triumph in 1970 when it beat PAS Club of Iran to clinch the IFA Shield for the 10th time, East Bengal will felicitate the team of yesteryears at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.
The win was historic for football in the country as it was for the first time an Indian team had defeated a foreign team to win the IFA Shield title post-Independence era, said the 1970 IFA Shield winning captain Santo Mitra.
On the same occasion, the club will also felicitate the present Indian football team which did the country proud by clinching the AFC Challenge Cup, under Baichung Bhutia, last month.
The stars of the 1970 winning team, Mohammed Habib, goalkeeper Peter Thangaraj, Shyam Thapa, Syed Nayeemuddin, are expected to take part, added Mitra. — PTI
