District Industries Centre organises meeting to explore avenues

CHENGAM: The District Industries Centre organised a meeting on Wednesday detailing the avenues available to start micro, small and medium industries in Chengam taluk.

Addressing a huge gathering at the Chengam Block Development Office, Murugan, General Manager, District Industries Centre, said that Chengam offered plenty of opportunities to start micro industries, which required an overall investment of Rs.25 lakh. They could be started in any of the 19 blocks in the district. The State government would provide 15 per cent subsidy on machinery and 20 per cent subsidy would be offered on power consumption for 36 months. The District Industries Centre would offer assistance and the government meet the registration expense.

Referring to opportunities available for investing in small and medium scale industries, Mr. Murugan said Chengam had all the potential for starting small and medium scale industries.

The only problem was that people had to come forward to invest.

Loans could be availed through banks. Small and medium scale industries could be started in 18 of the 19 blocks in the district. Any industry started with an investment of up to Rs. 5 crore would be classified as small scale industry. For the medium scale industries, the investment would be up to Rs.10 crore.

He said that the government had introduced sops for starting small scale industries, particularly in areas classified as backward.

Chengam was one of the backward blocks in the district. Stating that Chengam block thrived on agriculture, Mr. Murugan said ample opportunities were available to start agro-based industries in all 19 blocks of the district.

A total of 56 per cent of the population depended on agriculture and other allied activities and the total contribution to the State income through agriculture activities from the district was 13 per cent.

As per the statistics available, 62.59 lakh hectares of land were classified as agriculture fields. Opportunities were plenty in the field of floriculture and bio-fuel.

G. Kumar, Chengam Panchayat Union Chairman, said initiative would be taken to bring in industrial cooperative estates and activities to the Chengam block. Such awareness programme would serve as an initiative in this regard, he said.
