KRISHNAGIRI: Bargur town panchayat is showing the way in solid waste management.Executive Officer Babulal told The Hindu that “under this scheme a manure production facility with a well landscaped park has been set up on a 1.66-acre plot on Jagadevi Road in Bargur Town.

In Bargur town 1 tonne solid waste has been collected door to door by the Om Sakthi Women Self-help group from daily. For this purpose 15 members in this group is actively engaged and they are provided with 3-wheeler with a monthly honorarium of Rs. 1,250 each.”

“Solid wastes collected by the self-help group have been segregated as biodegradable waste and non degradable waste. The municipality has built 20 cement tanks to dump the waste. Pancha Kavyam (fermented fluid produced from milk, curd, ghee, cow dung, urine and 10 poovan bananas) used for quick degradation of wastes daily. About 2 litres of Pancha Kavyam mixed in 25 litres of water is applied in all 20 tanks daily for 40 to 50 days.

Later the degraded wastes are removed from the tanks and dried in direct sun.

Then the powdered natural manure is stored in a room. This is being sold by the Bargur Selection Grade Town Panchayat at 0.50 paise a kg.

“The farmers in around the Bargur town are coming in strength to this yard and purchasing the cheap natural manure,” he added.

“At the yard, a model park has been set up using the manure produced there. Brinjal, kadies finger, mango too are cultivated,” Mr. Babulal said.

The scheme has been successfully implemented under the guidance of the Commissioner of Town Panchayats, K. Gopal.

A manual was released by the Town Panchayat Commissioner. Rukmani, Town Panchayat Regional Assistant Director for Dharmapuri Zone, is monitoring the scheme.
