Drive on to raise vegetable production

Staff Reporter

Putting their heads together: Ministers T.M. Thomas Isaac and Paloli Mohammed Kutty in discussion at the ‘Mararikulam Declaration’ function in Cherthala on Sunday.

ALAPPUZHA: The State’s efforts to achieve food security have taken a major step forward with nearly 300 representatives from 100 panchayats adopting the Mararikulam Declaration for Self-Sufficiency in Vegetable Production in Cherthala on Sunday.

The two-page declaration was read out by Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac at the valedictory of a two-day workshop on “Local governing bodies and vegetable production.” The declaration had 16 resolutions to guide a multi-pronged campaign to increase vegetable production in the State from 10 lakh tonnes a year to 20-30 lakh tonnes.

Dr. Isaac said Rs.25 crore would be set aside for projects under the campaign. As part of making agriculture a viable venture, processing units for value-added agro products would be encouraged. The State government would bring about a major change in the Kudumbasree movement for this. Kudumbasree would be transformed from a body that distributed bank loans to an agency that ensured employment and income for poor women.

A Vegetable Price Stability Fund would be introduced by local self-governing bodies while interest-free loans would be extended to joint ventures in commercial agriculture.

The campaign would aim at increasing the productivity from eight tonnes to at least 15 tonnes a hectare. Another resolution is to increase the vegetable cultivation acreage by at least 50,000 hectares.

A fusion of traditional and modern agriculture techniques, opening of vegetable sale outlets in all panchayats, district headquarters and major towns and utilisation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme are among the resolutions.

Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty inaugurated the meeting. Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran presided.
