For improvement: The Union Government will soon release Rs. 2.5 crore to upgrade the Industrial Training Institute, Erode. — ERODE: Industrial Training Institute, Erode, is all set for a make over. Probably by the beginning of the next academic year it will have new infrastructure, new courses, additional faculty and increased student in-take. Enabling the make over is the Union Government, which as part of a scheme to upgrade technical institutions across the country will spend Rs. 2.5 crore for development. Managing the money and overseeing the changes will be a 11-member Institute Management Committee. It has representatives from industry, Erode District Small Industries Association, and ITI. There is a student representative as well. According to the Committee’s Chairman, M. Mylswami, Senior General Manager (Administration) of Sakthi Auto Component Ltd., Erode, four new trades will be refrigeration and air-conditioner mechanic, draughtsman (civil), advanced machine tools operator and computer operator and programming assistant. The traders have been selected keeping in mind the demand for skilled labour of such category from local industries, says the president of Erode District Small Industries Association, R. Mylsami. The committee will also look into aspects like human resource assistance and placement opportunities from students. “The industry will share its technical expertise in the chosen trades by sending engineers and other personnel to talk to students. And, it will also arrange to campus recruitments,” Chairman Mr. Mylswami says. Sources in the institute say that each of the new trades will take in 16 students. Faculty in the traders chosen will be appointed. To house the students, the committee will build new classrooms, for which about Rs. 60 lakh will be spent. A similar investment will be made in getting the latest equipment needed. The sources add they have submitted the proposal to the State Government, which will forward the same to the Union Government. The fund will be distributed thereafter and the new scheme of things is expected to be in place by June 2009.
