Jayalalithaa permitted to move court with regard to threat letter

Letter warned her against interfering in LTTE issue

AIADMK seeks enhanced security for Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday permitted counsel for the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, to move the court on Thursday with regard to a letter, which issued a “final warning to her not to interfere in the Tamil Eelam LTTE issue”.

Counsel for Ms.Jayalalithaa, A. Navaneethakrishnan and L.P. Shanmugasundaram, told Justice M. Jaichandren in his chamber this afternoon regarding the receipt of the letter by the former Chief Minister.

Mr. Justice Jaichandren permitted counsel to move the court in the matter on Thursday.

In the letter from “Ulagath Thamizh Ina Paadukaappu Kazhagam (Bangkok branch), headquarters at Canada-910002,” the organisation’s “Aasia Thitta Aluvalar, Ve. Thamizhmaenthan” asked the former Chief Minister to mind her business and not to indulge in a “false campaign” against the Tamil Eelam LTTE in Tamil Nadu.

The letter said she was being warned in her own interest.

If she interfered in the issue, the consequences would be “very disastrous.” She was being given a chance to change her attitude. If she failed to do so, she would meet the fate that befell Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan. She should not clash with the Tamils’ feelings.

This was not just a threat. It was a display of “our determination.” She should understand their anxiety.

The Tigers were for a homeland, the communication said.

As the Opposition Leader in the State, she should perform that duty alone. The letter asked her not to antagonise the eight crore Tamil population in the world. This was the final warning. Director-General of Police K.P. Jain said the contents of the letter were being examined.

“We are taking appropriate steps in this regard,” Mr. Jain said. AIADMK leader D. Jayakumar met the Police Commissioner R. Sekar and submitted a petition seeking enhanced security to Ms. Jayalalithaa.

The Central Crime Branch have registered a case under Section 506(2) (Criminal Intimidation) based on the petition, Mr. Sekar said.
