All the best: Governor M.C. Bhandare being introduced to different teams participating in the zonal inter-university kabaddi (women) tournament at Bhanja Bihar on Sunday. — BERHAMPUR: The North-East Zonal Inter-university Women’s Kabaddi tournament was inaugurated in Berhampur University campus on Sunday by Governor Murali Chandrakant Bhandare. Addressing the participants in this zonal meet after the march past, Mr Bhandare encouraged the girls to keep alive their enthusiasm in the sport field in all walks of life. He emphasized on the need of proper training for budding sports persons of the country. Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu and Vice Chancellor Bijay Kumar Sahu were also present at the inaugural function. Mr Chandrasekhar Sahu said due to several reasons interest in sports was going down in many areas. He said a few decades back the state Kabaddi team used to have half of its players from Ganjam district, but now adept Kabaddi players were hard to locate in the same area. The Vice-Chancellor said they had conducted this zonal tournament to increase enthusiasm of girls towards the sport in south Orissa. In 2007 the Berhampur University had conducted maiden inter-college Kabaddi tournament for girls. The guests witnessed the first match of tournament played between Ranchi University and the Kalyan University. Finals of the six-day tournament would be played on Friday. In all teams from 43 universities are expected to participate in the tournament and 21 teams had already arrived by Sunday afternoon. Rest of the teams would reach here by Monday morning.
