India, Singapore sign MoU for IT task force

NEW DELHI, March 30

INDIA and Singapore have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formally set up a task force on information technology (IT) which will primarily focus on high-technology activities.

The MoU, while recognising the extensive trade between the two countries in the area of IT, underlines the need to tap the capabilities and opportunities in the sector in a more comprehensive manner, an official statement said here.

The MoU was signed on Thursday by Mr. Pramod Mahajan, Minister for Information Technology, who is visiting Singapore, and Mr. Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for Communications and IT, Singapore Government, the statement said.

The scope of cooperation between the two countries will be explored in areas such as electronic commerce, electronic governance, information security, human resource development, research, design and development and exploring third country markets, espec ially in South-East Asia.

In order to implement the scope of cooperation, the task force will identify programmes for the purpose of exploring and supporting research needs in the fields of innovation, venture financing, incubating and infrastructural development.

The task force will promote development skills through exchange programmes, joint sponsorships of conferences and seminars in the field of information communication technology. Another key item on the agenda will be to encourage entrepreneurs in both th e countries to foster incubation start-ups, the statement said.
