Competition law panel term extended

NEW DELHI, March 30

THE Government has extended the term of the nine-member committee on Competition Law by another two months up to the end of May. The committee set up on October 26, 1999, was to submit its report by the end of March.

The committee has completed much of its tasks, according to an official release. It has already interacted with trade, commerce and industry, elicited their well considered views, attended a seminar in London to see whether the British Competition Law co uld be emulated or replicated in India.

The committee has also consulted the European Commission on Competition Law and will be finalising its report shortly. It is intended to suggest a modern Competition Law suitable to the needs of the country in the light of emerging globalisation of the I ndian economy.
