`SC has tried to meet people's aspirations'
Our Bureau
CALCUTTA, April 22
OVER the last 50 years, the Supreme Court has endeavoured to meet the aspirations of people in the largest democracy in the world. Since pre-Vedic times, the march of the judicial system in India has been a march towards securing justice for one and all,
according to Dr. A.S. Anand, Chief Justice of India.
In his inaugural address at an exhibition titled `50 years of the Supreme Court of India and the Indian legal system' here, Mr. Justice Anand dwelt at length on the history of Indian jurisprudence and felt the exhibition would create interest and foster
research in the Indian judicial system.
The West Bengal Governor, Mr. Viren Shah, said the judiciary was perceived as a protector of colonial interests during the days of the Raj. Post-independence, however, the judiciary had been the protector of rights of all groups in society.
The exhibition, which is part of a year-long celebration of the Supreme Court, attempts to showcase the apex court's ``tradition of erudition'' as left behind by its predecessor, the Federal Court. It depicts all that has gone into the legal system of In
dia at the apex of which is the Supreme Court.
Divided into two parts, the exhibition traces the birth of the Supreme Court consequent upon deliberations in the Constituent assembly. There are visuals, case laws and excerpts of judgements which have had a far-reaching impact on the lives of people in
India.
