Good demand at Guwahati auction

GUWAHATI: Guwahati sale No. 21 (May 23 & 24) saw good demand for clean and liquoring Assam brokens though prices were slightly lower than last level. The remainder, however, met with only fair enquiry and prices eased by Rs. 4-6.

Smaller brokens and fannings in the plain and medium segments declined even further at times and also witnessed some withdrawals. Cachars also followed the trend of the market with clean and grainy sorts selling at around last levels. Remainder were lowe r by Rs. 2-4 following a decline in quality.

There was a fair enquiry from the major blender. Among the other packeteers, only Godfrey Phillips lent selective interest for medium smaller brokens. The remainder did not operate. Better sorts continued to attract enquiry from the Gujarat and Maharasht ra markets.

There was, however, only some interest from other local dealers. One of the Commonwealth of Independent shippers lent support for medium and better medium larger brokens while Poland operated selectively for cheaper sorts.

There was limited enquiry for dusts, particularly plain and medium kinds which suffered heavy withdrawals. Levels for liquoring teas were lower by Rs. 3-4. The remainder declined by up to Rs. 6 and plain and non-liquoring sorts were difficult of sale.

Total outlots consequently amounted to as much as 45 per cent of the total offerings. There was some enquiry from the major blender while one of the packeteers operated selectively for liquoring secondaries. -- Our Bureau
