NHAI appeal to PM

THE National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), vested with implementation of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), recently requested the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to give it a free hand in handling the job, without any bure aucratic interference.

The NHAI claims that in between the vast paper work, meeting prospective contractors, bidders, consultants and project operators, finalising contract documents and attending seminars and conferences organised by trade chambers, the NHAI officials are for ced to sort out issues raised by the Ministries of Finance, Law and Surface Transport.

The NHAI feels it needs `autonomy' for speedy execution of the NHDP, considering the tough time schedule set by the Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee. -- Our Bureau
