Vallarpadam Load Centre project -- Will P&O Ports bag the contract?
COCHIN Port Trust (CoPT) has suggested to P&O Ports, the lone financial bidder for the port's proposed container terminal project, that it explore the scope of a tie-up with the Container Corporation of India (Concor), an Indian Railway subsidiary, for r ail linkages with the proposed project, known as the Vallarpadam Load Centre (VLC).

Mumbai port's special VRS scheme
THE best part of the Mumbai Port's ``strategic plan'' for development is its proposal to trim the labour force. But it will also be the most difficult one to implement, going by past experience. According to Port Trust's estimates, around 14,000 workers, nearly half total labour force, are redundant. The Port Trust has drawn up a special VRS which, according to its chairman, Mr. Arun Mago, is attractive and will cost Rs. 700 crores if accepted by all.

Need for interaction between merchant marine and Navy
PROPER interaction between the merchant navy and the Indian Navy is essential in the present day global context, to maintain the most effective state of readiness, in the event of a crisis. In a paper ``Merchant Navy: Supporting role during maritime oper ations,'' Cdr. G. M. Singh, of the Naval Defence School, Kochi -- points out that such an interaction will enable quick and effective action during a crisis.
