Consumer Notes
Just fizz
As far as consumers are concerned, the truth seems to be elusive. Let me illustrate with a few examples.

Corporate
Emotional edge to the rescue
If intelligence quotient or IQ helps you get a job, then emotional quotient or EQ helps you get a promotion! And as companies get lean and mean, the concept of emotional intelligence (EI), synonymous with EQ, becomes more t han just relevant in the fast-changing business environment.

Zen and how!
Satisfaction at work is more often related to one's own attitude and work habits than to any situation inherent in the work itself. Most often dissatisfaction comes in because we perceive ourselves as being ineffective at our work. Since what we do has s uch a large impact on our self-esteem and on our concept of ourselves as individuals, dissatisfaction at work can overflow into our personal lives and relationships and have a cascading effect on all areas of our lives.

Handling problems
Sometimes monumental problems come from out of the blue and hit you between the eyes -- problems you've never faced before and never imagined you would. They could be problems at work, a personal crisis or a tragedy. Nothing in your exper ience or cognitive map prepares you or even gives you a clue as to how you should cope. At such times we lose courage, feel alone, depressed, and often don't know where to even begin -- the problem seems so monumental.

Environment

A river is reborn
River Aravari came to life in 1994. Till then, it was a largely dead and dry watercourse that flowed only during the monsoons. Now johads (small water harvesting structures) are full to the brim and fresh green foliage peeps out of the arid and denuded s lopes of the Aravalli hills.

Health

The heart of all matter
There is no greater happiness than when the heart sings, no sound sweeter than its strong beat, no peace as profound as when love resounds in its depths.

Hotels

Tasteful decoy
Wining and dining can be a heady experience. Sensual, too, especially when you have wine coursing through your veins in a delicious mocktail that leaves you ``all in a flutter'' (that's the name). And when the lotus posture is not the ancie nt yogic asana but a comfortable seating experience designed to take you through your meal with the least amount of intrusion.

Miscellaneous
A rum place!
India has several unique eateries, but this one in Nepal stands tall for not only its concept, but its tradition as well.

Telecommunications

A long journey
As the television industry in India gets set for its second revolution -- the satellite explosion was the first -- we are going to see many old stars fade away and new ones come in.

Travel & Places

Where the gods walk tall
A repository of cultural and religious influences from mainland India, Tibet and Central Asia, Ladakh has often been referred to as `the roof of the world'. With four major mountain ranges -- the Great Himalayan, Zanskar, Ladakh and the Karkoram -- passing through it, it is filled with snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Valley heights range from a mere 8,000 ft up to 15,000 ft and mountain passes nestle as high as 20,000 ft.

In Santa Claus land
Our quick `Arctic briefing' was over mugfuls of blueberry vodka, and our guides from `Wildtours' -- both of whom were veterans in their field -- seemed in a hurry as they kitted us out in isothermic gear.
