Plans for storm-water drainage in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, June 4

THE Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, has said that the Assam Government had already undertaken the Guwahati Metropolitan Area Storm Drainage Improvement Programme in the city.

He said the project envisaged a number of schemes all over Guwahati city which are proposed to be completed by June, 2002 spanning two-and-a-half years. The total project cost is Rs. 95.80 crores of which 70 per cent, i.e., Rs. 67.06 crores will be a loa n from HUDCO and the remaining will be borne by the State Government.

The project work already initiated in December last year includes improvement of storm-water reservoir and natural drainage channels besides construction of trunk drains, sub-trunk drains, branch drains, sluice structure and bridges over two rivulets in the city. The executing agencies are Town & Country Planning, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Flood Control Department, State Public Works Department and Irrigation Department.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, laying the foundation stone of four concrete bridges at Abhayapuri, announced that the Government had decided to convert all wooden bridges in the State to concrete bridges.

He said in the first phase, 139 concrete bridges would be constructed with financial assistance of Nabard at a cost of Rs. 85 crores. Nabard would give another financial assistance of Rs. 141 crores for construction of 82 more concrete bridges, he added. According to him, the State Government had also decided to construct 700 km of road with loan assistance from the World Bank.
