Gramophone Co pact with Pyramid Intl

CHENNAI, June 18
GRAMOPHONE Company of India Ltd (GCIL) has entered into a 7-year sole and exclusive licensing agreement with the Pyramid group for the audio rights of its repertoire of Tamil music titles for the domestic market.
Mr. N. Sathasivam, Vice-President, Commercial, GCIL, said that the agreement was signed earlier with Pyramid International Pte Ltd, Singapore, for the audio rights for the international market.
Pyramid, Mr. Sathasivam said has acquired the audio rights of most of the new Tamil films since 1992. The Pyramid catalogue contains A.R. Rehman titles and a major part of the musical scores of Ilayaraja. The catalogue includes 440 Tamil films, 195 carna
tic classical and devotional and 45 Malayalam films.
The size of Tamil cassette market is around 25 million cassettes, Mr. Sathasivam said. Around 40 per cent of this market is in India with almost 34 per cent in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Ghanshyam Hemdev, Director, Music Master Audio and Video Manufacturing Co (P) Ltd, the company that owns the Pyramid brand, said that with this tie-up, Pyramid would benefit GCIL's distribution infrastructure.
