Cyberwave, Israeli co tie up for cable modems

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, June 18

CYBERWAVE Internet Solutions Ltd (CISL), the Chennai-based category-B Internet Service Provider (ISP), has entered into a strategic alliance with the Israel-based NetGame, one of the leading players in cable modem technology, for marketing the latter's c able modem products in India.

CISL, which is currently offering a host of Internet services such as Internet through dial-up, Internet access through high-speed leased lines on a turnkey basis, has recently launched Internet services through cable network.

The CISL Managing Director, Mr. S. Sriram, and the Director, Mr. P. Suresh, told newspersons here that under the agreement with NetGame, its cable modem products would be marked by Cyberwave in India. ``The cable modem technology being offered by NetGame is ideally suited for Indian conditions because it is designed to work in a high noise level environment. This is very important because cable networks are prone to pick up noise from the environment. In addition to this, these modems are cost-wise much more economical than the other cable modems available,'' they said.

To avail the cable Internet facility, the customer requires a cable modem to be connected to a computer. The company charges one-time installation charges of Rs. 12,000 for the equipment such as cable modem, bridges and RF cable networking and an amount of Rs. 12,000 per annum towards Internet services.

Cyberwave plans to become a category-A ISP, set up its own gateway and expand its services to Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Mangalore and Kochi during the next one year, Mr. Sriram and Mr. Suresh said.
